Flicky

Welcome to the Flicky Podcast, where even good films get bad reviews! John and Christopher review well-regarded, or popular, films from Golden Age Hollywood to Present-Day Cinema. Sometimes irreverent, often snarky, but always honest, the Flicky Podcast aims to give a fresh perspective on movies whose reputations have been established. John and Christopher hope to challenge listeners perceptions on what a good movie is in a podcast that is equal parts subversive, entertaining, and informative.

The Flicky Podcast tackles Bram Stoker's Dracula, which is important because it's not actually Bram Stoker's Dracula. John and Christopher discuss Keanu Reeves, and Winona Ryder's, horrible acting. The boys also go over how the added element of a doomed romance makes the story illogical and sinks the film. They also talk about how Gary Oldman crushes in his role and that the technical aspects of the film are great. They end with how Francis Ford Coppola, the film's director, has had a terrible filmography after Apocalypse Now.

This week on the Flicky Podcast, John and Christopher tackle one of their white whales: Titanic. One of the highest grossing films of all time, and one of the most awarded, the boys discuss how well-made the movie is on a technical level. They also talk about how thin and lazy the story is. The harshest judgment is reserved for Rose, who may be one of the most selfish and narcissistic characters committed to film.

John and Christopher review Bohemian Rhapsody, a film about one of their favorite bands, Queen, and its incomprable frontman, Freddie Mercury. The boys discuss the film's troubled production and how it affected the final product. They dig deep into how the script is all over the place and egregiously misrepresents history. The film doesn't reach the heights of its subject matter although the movie is buoyed by a good cast, a great leading man performance, and the fantastic music of Queen. Through all of this, the boys highlight the power of editing and how John Ottman may not be the hero the film wanted, but he's the hero the film needed.

Moonlight: Chris Feels Nothing

Thursday May 12, 2022

Thursday May 12, 2022

After discussing the drama surrounding the Fast series and late-career Warren Beatty, the boys discuss the Best Picture winning film, Moonlight. Where John sees a great movie with an emotional pay-off, Christopher sees a cold and distant film. This is the first time in the podcast's history where they disagree on an assessment of a film. They end the discussion with how critics have entered a groupthink mentality and how criticizing Moonlight will lead to the ruin of Christopher's non-existent career.

Gee Willikers, listeners! In a mostly non-spoiler review, John and Christopher talk about Matt Reeves's take on the iconic comic book hero, Batman. From a long, cumbersome plot to its homages to other films, the guys both praise and criticize the film, or at least what they can see on the screen. It's a very dark movie, and we're not just talking about the themes from this grimdark film.

Monday Apr 25, 2022

After abandoning discussing Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ, Christopher and John discuss how problematic Forrest Gump is. Marketed as an Everyman, John exposes that Gump is a mentally-handicapped super athlete. Knowing that Forrest is intellectually disabled, the boys discuss how the film's narrative is troublesome and how some of the characters who interact with Forrest are creepy and duplicitous. But this is all OK because the movie fetishizes nostalgia and makes its target audience, the Boomer Generation, feel good about themselves.  After the review, John details the exploits of a true-to-life Forrest Gump: Lord Timothy Dexter.

Saturday Apr 16, 2022

John and Christopher decide to delve into Disney's MCU by reviewing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. They discuss the depiction of the film's villain, The Mandarin, and why he was characterized the way he was. Also discussed is the big business of Hollywood tentpole films and how critics factor in. The boys see a film that had promise, but falls short of expectations.

The Mighty Ducks

Monday Apr 11, 2022

Monday Apr 11, 2022

John and Christopher go back and review a film from their childhood. With their rose-colored glasses taken off, the boys realize that Gordon Bombay is more villain than hero.

Monday Apr 04, 2022

Christopher eats crow and likes the 94th Best Picture winner, Coda. Contrary to the mission of the podcast, the boys give a largely spoiler-free review of a film they actually enjoyed. However, Will Smith allows John and Christopher to make fun of something.

Saturday Mar 26, 2022

John and Christopher of the Flicky Podcast discuss their disappointment in the promising Don't Look Up, and the unpromising prospects of what Oscar Night will probably bring.
