Flicky

Welcome to the Flicky Podcast, where even good films get bad reviews! John and Christopher review well-regarded, or popular, films from Golden Age Hollywood to Present-Day Cinema. Sometimes irreverent, often snarky, but always honest, the Flicky Podcast aims to give a fresh perspective on movies whose reputations have been established. John and Christopher hope to challenge listeners perceptions on what a good movie is in a podcast that is equal parts subversive, entertaining, and informative.

The Flicky Podcast is back, and this time they're tackling a television series: the much ballyhooed prequel series, The Rings of Power. Acknowledging that this may be a cynical ploy to try and gain more listeners, John and Christopher go into the why they chose this show, the production of the series, and delve into the positives and negatives they saw in the series premiere. Has Amazon created a series that will capture the cultural zeitgeist? The boys seem to have a good idea if it will or won't.

The Flicky Podcast is back with a review of Baz Luhrmann's biopic. John and Christopher are aghast with how messy the film is. The epitome of style over substance, the film wastes a great performance by Austin Butler. The boys are left disgusted and disappointed by a project that should've been a lot better.

After going through some news in the entertainment world, the Flicky Podcast tackles the 1989 baseball classic, Field of Dreams. Nominated for Best Picture, and beloved by scores of Americans, John and Christopher discuss why this film is seen through rose-tinted glasses. Acknowledging that there are good themes and ideas in the movie, the boys trash the end product. The film contains atrocious dialogue, bad acting, and terrible direction. It leaves them feeling disappointed in knowing this could've been an excellent film if it had a better team making the movie.

After spending about a month away from recording, the Flicky Podcast is back with a review of the mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick. The boys first discuss the debacle of the Batgirl film, and then discuss a film that entertained both of them. From its tight script, professional craftsmanship, and believable characters the sequel outpaces the original in every facet of filmmaking. Christopher and John have one slight disagreement about the movie, but this is a rare occurrence in the history of the podcast...a film both guys enjoyed!

This week's episode of the Flicky Podcast features John's list of eight desert island films. John's first seven films, including some of the best films ever made, are world renown for their intellect, high quality, and artistry. John concludes his list with a major surprise in selecting a bad film, but it's a bad film that touches John's inner child.

While John is away on his honeymoon, the boys recorded two episodes of the podcast that were influenced by Desert Island Discs, the BBC radio show. After explaining their film centric parameters, Christopher gives his list of eight films he would bring with him to a desert island.

Because John will be getting married in Greece, Christopher decided that they will be reviewing 2008's Mamma Mia! An extremely popular stage musical around the world, the boys come to the conclusion that the story probably works better on the stage than film. John and Christopher come away impressed by the acting, but the singing and story leave a lot to be desired. One of John's criticisms of the film is that sometimes ABBA's songs don't fit naturally with the story being told. The episode finishes with Christopher and John disagreeing with how awful Pierce Brosnan's singing truly is.

Although originally intending to review The Professional on this week's episode of the Flicky Podcast, John asked to review, midweek, Top Gun. John and Christopher delve into how the film was a cultural flashpoint in the 80s, and how it was a perfect encapsulation of the film business in the 1980s. They poke fun at the generic plot, corny dialogue, and unsubtle characterization. The boys agree that it is a fun, yet flawed, film that accomplished what it set out to do: make Tom Cruise a megastar and sell a lot of movie tickets.

This episode of the Flicky Podcast begins with short reviews of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in America, the final season of Peaky Blinders, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. They also talk about how Jeff Bridges is cancer free and how he has a new show on FX called The Old Man. John and Christopher then dive into the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. They discuss how Disney not only dropped the ball with this film, but the entire sequel series. Rather than go from plot point to plot point, the boys take a macro view of the film and how it relates to the series as a whole.

After discussing how the Jurassic World film series is teflon, John and Christopher dive into the sequel to Blade Runner, the sci-fi masterpiece. Like recent films that were reviewed, Blade Runner is a beautiful, technically brilliant film that has a less than desired plot. The boys skewer the fan service elements of the story and the happy coincidences found throughout the film. They end with a plea to Ryan Gosling to embrace the movie star the world wants him to be.
